1 /5 David West: We have had insurance with State Farm on all of our vehicles (currently 6) and our home for over 15 years but will be switching today. On the two occasions I have needed them they have been less than satisfactory.
On the first occasion the spring on my garage door snapped and damaged my car. They lied to me and told me it had to be filed as a collision (which would have increased my premiums). I did argue with them and won but I have to wonder how many other people they have tried that on.
The second occasion was just recently. Someone backed into our car (too busy on her phone). She admitted it was her fault and gave us her insurance details. She is actually insured with the same State Farm agent so we mistakingly thought that this would not present any problems. Unfortunately the other driver is refusing to answer the phone when State Farm calls her. They did not bother to text, e-mail or send certified letter to her. As a result they are saying that we must go through our insurance policy to get the car repaired (not only costing us out of pocket for our deductable but increasing our rates for making a claim). We were told "that is what you have insurance for". No, that is what the other driver has insurance for, we did not cause the accident.
We will fight this decision through the State Department of Insurance.
Thanks for nothing State Farm!
Update:
Late last week we were informed by the Wa State Dept of Insurance that they had contacted State Farm about this issue.
On Monday we received a call from the same person at State Farm that we were dealing with. We were told that they would reopen the case. Within 45 minutes they called back to inform us that they had made contact with the other driver who admitted they were at fault and that repairs to our car would go through their insurance. Amazing!
What a shame you did not take care if this the right way in the first place?! Now you have lost a good customer for life. By the way, we switched all of our vehicles and house to USAA and actually saved a few $s
