Shawneetown Bank State Historic Site - Shawneetown (IL)

5 /5 Scott C: Such a beautiful building in such a waste of a town. Im not sure what happened, but its literally a ghost town - the only thing I could find that was there was a bar. I wish the bank had been open so that I could tour it.

5 /5 Gilbert Donna (Mrs G): 09/02/2024 Such a beautiful place to visit, rich in the history of Illinois and left pretty much desolate by flooding. The Old Shawneetown Bank is a standing monument to the richness the town once held. Not far south of the bank on Main Street is the John Marshall House Museum(was not open). One of the founders of the Old Shawneetown Bank. My understanding is that it is also the site of the first bank.

3 /5 Chris Wills: Interesting building in the remnants of an interesting town, but you cant tour the bank and there is no significant historical interpretation for visitors.

5 /5 Detlef B: Old Shawneetown is low-key amazing. Not much to see there for a visitor, but what remains is an astonishing combination of moving, fascinating, weird, desolate and dangerous. Seriously, be very careful if you choose to go anywhere near the old buildings, or if you walk/climb onto the earthen berm separating the town from the river which has, apparently, destroyed it time and time again.
