5 /5 Ursula P: Our family had the honor of visiting the Captain Joseph House for a 6-day retreat. We were treated with the utmost respect, kindness, and gratitude by everyone. I cannot express how much this respite meant to our family’s healing. Our host and the founder of CJH, Betsy Schulz, is a Gold Star mother who lost her son, Joseph, in Afghanistan. This is their legacy, to care for other Fallen Hero families, to bring them together in a safe haven. We met another GS family and had the opportunity to talk with each other, sharing a common tragedy, and not feeling judged by those who don’t understand. Nothing is forced, like some other programs. Here you share things as you are able to, and want to. We had a fun outing each day, walks in nature, visiting local towns, and enjoying the breathtaking Pacific Northwest. Every travel expense is paid, so it is not a financial burden for any family to come. The Captain Joseph House has been lovingly remodeled to make room for up to 3 families at a time, accommodating all ages from infants to grandparents and ADA compliant. I’m so grateful to everyone involved with this foundation - from Betsy Schulz (who is a true Hero for never giving up and making this happen), to the incredible staff, to the volunteers who worked on the house, to the donors for believing in this foundation, and to the town of Port Angeles who welcomed us. THANK YOU on behalf of my family. This was a precious experience that we will treasure always. Out of 5 stars, I give it a 10!!!
