1 /5 Maryella Wilson: I initially chose Smith & Weer Bankruptcy Attorneys because of their professional demeanor and the positive impression made by the attorney and paralegal. At the outset, everything seemed well-organized, and we felt confident in proceeding with their services. Unfortunately, after we paid for the services, our experience quickly took a turn for the worse.
We were told that the bankruptcy filing would take one to two weeks after submitting the required documents. However, there were multiple delays, with our case being pushed back due to "emergency bankruptcies" being prioritized over ours. Once we finally managed to file, we encountered further issues. The paralegal was unable to locate the original paperwork we had submitted, requiring us to resubmit it on two separate occasions.
After the filing, we expected clearer communication and guidance, but this was not the case. Whenever we reached out to the attorney with questions, we felt rushed off the phone and as though our concerns were being treated as a bother. The lack of professionalism extended to the office staff as well, with the secretary becoming visibly frustrated and even hanging up on us during a phone call.
Furthermore, during our 341 meeting, the Trustee requested an additional payment based on funds in our account that were exempt under Illinois bankruptcy exemptions. Our attorney initially informed us that we had no exemptions remaining, but after conducting our own research and providing the necessary documentation, we were able to clarify the situation and demonstrate that we were, in fact, exempt from paying the additional funds.
While the matter was ultimately resolved in our favor, the process was far more difficult and stressful than it should have been due to the lack of professionalism and poor communication from Smith & Weer. While the outcome was positive, I would caution potential clients about the level of service and professionalism provided by this office.
